The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce hosted a legislative breakfast on April 28 at the Omni Newport News. Senators John Miller and Tommy Norment and Delegates Phil Hamilton, Glenn Oder, and Brenda Pogge were in attendance to reflect on the 2009 General Assembly Session.
Each legislator was given an opportunity to highlight their successes and accomplishments from the previous. Key comments included references to the money used to attract Continental AG and Canon expansions by Senator Miller, efforts to stimulate the state economy (without federal aid) by Delegate Hamilton, and continued frustration with transportation (and a noted lack of trust between the public and elected officials) by Delegate Oder.
Bill Bell from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding acted as moderator and asked the panel questions regarding unemployment benefits, economic recovery programs, transportation and its effect on the BRAC process, and workforce initiatives. Senator Norment in response to the transportation question reminded everyone to hold their elected officials accountable and to make their views known during the elections.
